At $1.38/therm (EIA, Nov 2026), a typical 37-therm month costs about $51.06 before the fixed fee. Gas is the smallest utility bill for most Texas homes — until a cold snap hits.

Typical Texas household: about 37 therms/month on average — much more in winter, much less in summer.

Most Texas gas bills include a monthly customer charge even if you use no gas. Enter 0 if yours doesn't.

Estimate only — not financial advice. Gas prices move with the seasons and by utility; the $1.38/therm figure is the EIA statewide figure for Nov 2026, and CenterPoint's typical range is $0.90–$1.20/therm. Use the number on your own bill for the most accurate result.

How Texas natural gas bills work

A therm is about 100 cubic feet of gas. Your bill is therms used × the price per therm, plus a fixed monthly customer charge that you pay even in months when the heater never runs.

Unlike electricity, you cannot shop for a gas provider in Texas. Atmos Energy serves North Texas, CenterPoint serves Houston and the east/south, Texas Gas Service serves Austin and the central/west, and CPS Energy serves San Antonio — one provider per area, with rates set by regulators.

Gas use is seasonal. A Texas home might burn 80+ therms in a cold January and under 15 in July, when only the water heater and stove use gas. Budget on the yearly average, not the cheapest month.

If your winter gas bill spikes, the cheapest fixes are usually the simplest: lower the thermostat a degree or two, seal drafty doors and windows, and insulate exposed pipes — all cheaper than a new furnace.

Frequently asked questions

What is a therm?

A therm is a unit of heat energy — about 100 cubic feet of natural gas, or roughly 100,000 BTU. Your gas meter measures cubic feet and the bill converts it to therms.

Why is my gas bill higher in winter?

Heating is the big gas user in most Texas homes. Cold months can triple therms compared with summer, when only the water heater and stove run. The price per therm can also rise in winter.

Can I choose a cheaper gas company?

No — Texas gas is delivered by one regulated utility per area (Atmos, CenterPoint, Texas Gas Service, or CPS Energy). You can lower the bill by using less, not by switching providers.

Is $1.38 a therm a good price?

It is the EIA statewide figure for November 2026. CenterPoint residential customers typically see $0.90–$1.20/therm before fees, so your all-in price depends on the fixed fee and taxes on your bill.
